Why Some Businesses Rock While Others Rot!

The gap between a thriving business and one that folds faster than a cheap concertina often comes down to those playing the instruments…

This weekend, during a coaching session with one of my clients, we explored a simple but powerful question: What does leadership look like in a great organization—and what does it look like in one that’s rotten?

I’d like to preface this by saying that I am by no means claiming to be an expert on leadership. However, I have been fortunate enough to experience first-hand examples of truly exceptional leadership — and, on the other hand, I’ve also had a front-row seat to what I call the “7 Sins of Leadership” (see https://shorturl.at/Uqpb8). I’m also the first to admit that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea when it comes to leadership. Over the years, I’ve been called just about every name under the sun — some not so flattering, and, I dare say, some surprisingly positive as well…

In failing businesses, leaders tend to believe they already know everything. Their leadership team is usually a “Mirror Club” — everyone looks, thinks, and nods exactly the same way. Dissent is treated like a bad smell, and problems are either ignored or given a nice PowerPoint funeral or a Death by Excel session.

In successful businesses, leaders are courageous rather than cocky. Their teams are built like a well-stocked toolbox — different skills, backgrounds, and perspectives, all willing to challenge each other without fear of walking the plank. Disagreements aren’t personal; they’re fuel for better decisions, ala – “Positive Agitation!”

Key traits of failing leaders: Ego-driven, allergic to feedback, obsessed with being right.

Key traits of winning leaders: Humble enough to learn and apologise when required, brave enough to decide, and smart enough to hire people who are better than them in specific areas.

The short version? Businesses fail when leaders surround themselves with echoes. They succeed when they surround themselves with a rock band — different voices, an array of instruments, all playing from the same proverbial hymns sheet, so to speak!

Comments welcomed, as always!
