We Need Support!

Over the weekend, I came across a photo that instantly reminded me of one of my clients I’m coaching. She’s been on a wild ride of transformation—a bit like ditching a long-term relationship, only with fewer breakup playlists and more boardroom politics.

After years with the same company, she made the brave decision to move on. Why? Because despite her hard work and commitment, she constantly battled that unwelcome houseguest we all know too well: Imposter Syndrome. You know the one—it whispers sweet nothings like, “You’re not good enough,” and “They’re going to find out you have no idea what you’re doing.”

As we dissected her story, one glaring truth popped out like a bad wig in a wind tunnel: she wasn’t failing—she was unsupported. Scratch that—she wasn’t unsupported; she was spectacularly unsupported. You see, while she was busy leading a large, complex team through challenging terrain, she looked up for backup and saw… well… nothing. Nada. Zip. Squat! Except, of course, the head office boardroom full of “leaders” practicing their best LinkedIn poses and dishing out strategic buzzwords like they were selling ice cream from a van!

These armchair generals were more interested in polishing their personal brands than offering a helping hand. “On the ground support?” they scoffed from their ergonomic chairs more interested in adding more “generals” to a clueless, uncaring so-called leadership team. (We have a saying in Afrikaans, "Ja Broers". Directly translated into English, "Yes Brothers". All say what each other want to hear, ala politicians from the same political party).

Here’s the punchline, dear future (and current) leaders: climbing the ladder doesn’t mean you get to drop the weight of responsibility. In fact, leadership is more accountability, more involvement, and more responsibility—with fewer excuses and a lot less fluff. It’s not about swanning around to be “noticed” at every “enveloping opening event”, but more time “hands on” and “hands in” WITH those in your charge!

So, whether you’re stepping into middle management or the hallowed halls of the C-suite, don’t just sit there. Get out of the boardroom echo chamber, roll up your sleeves, and lead like someone who actually gives a damn!

Please. The trenches are waiting.

If you’ve experienced or experiencing this type of lack of support and need someone to help you navigate the minefields ahead, why not drop me a DM and let’s organise a time to chat!

Comments welcomed, as always.
