Eight Pillars of Performance

Last week, while unpacking a raft of business challenges with a colleague of mine, we discussed what it really takes to rebuild a business. It's a question that many leaders wrestle with, particularly in times of change or uncertainty.

The Eight Pillars of Performance are:
1. Ongoing strategising with a focus on a challenging and desired future.
2. Shared leadership that is transformational, continuously allowing the organisation to evolve.
3. Strong relationships with all stakeholders, creating a community of partners with a shared destiny.
4. Organisation design centred around our internal and external business partners.
5. Continuous improvement and relentless innovation as a way of life.
6. A people philosophy and practices that release the full potential of our people.
7. Powerful branding that energises everything we stand for.
8. Financial prudence and compliance, providing the backbone of the business.

When these eight pillars are aligned, they create an organisation that is resilient, adaptable and equipped for long-term success. Individually, each pillar is important. Collectively, they provide the foundation for building a business that can thrive in an ever-changing world.

This is certainly not rocket science. However, in my experience, I've seldom come across organisations that consistently execute all eight pillars—or even the majority of them. The challenge isn't understanding what needs to be done; it's having the discipline, commitment and leadership to put these principles into practice every single day.

Comments welcome, as always.
