7 Sins of Leadership – The Sinners!
In a recent conversation with a business colleague of mine, we were chewing on, what makes a great leader and what makes a bad leader – and there are many examples out there on what makes a great leader. But having traversed the globe working with many leaders, I’ve stumbled upon several that should never have been in a leadership role at all!
Below I have listed the 7 key Leadership Sinners!
1. The Narcissist:
It’s all about them, and their multitude of holiday homes, the expensive cars they drive, the top schools their kids go to, how many doctors are part of their inner circle – and take great pleasure in sharing this over and over, ad nauseum, with all who care to listen (more often than not, junior team members who have no option but to listen), believing this inspires those who are living hand to mouth...
2. The Scrooge:
Will do everything in their power to ensure that they get the lions share of everything, including but not limited to money, accolades, promotions, etc., with little regard for those who have actually done the real work, no matter if the business is in trouble – will ensure they are paid bonuses and receive hefty increases, while the rank and file scramble around to pick up the crumbs…
3. The Armchair General:
Always in “board meetings,” too “important” to engage with anyone in the business at junior level, firmly ensconced in the most salubrious office in the ivory towers…
4. The Absent Landlord:
Never available, especially when the heat is on but always visible at every “enveloping opening” event, and front and centre in every photo at the awards events. Typical responses: “I wasn’t aware of that” and/ or “Why was I not informed?” …
5. The Tyrant:
Complete bully with zero EQ and even less IQ…
6. The Unconscious Incompetent:
Over promoted, clueless, but has an answer for everything that makes zero sense – been lily padded from role to role to get rid of them from every department, doing just enough not to get fired…
7. The Politician:
Otherwise known as the “Teflon kid” – nothing sticks to them. Never answer a question directly, slick, and slimy leeching up to anyone and everyone when they’re in the room, but quick to change allegiance to whoever is in the next room…
Sound familiar?
Any others come to mind?
